LA VIRGEN
La Madre/ La Virgen or “The Mother/ The Virgin” is inspired by the Mexican rebozo and Georgina Godley. The Mexican rebozo is a shawl that got embedded into Mexican culture by a fusion of Asian culture, Spanish culture, and indigenous culture, after the Spanish conquest. This project takes an approach to motherhood, a theme that Georgina Godley used in her collections, most notably her collection called “Lumps and Bumps”. The rebozo also has an intimate approach to motherhood in Mexican culture, since this clothing is widely used by mothers to carry their babies around their chest. For my final piece, I wanted to use a jersey, a commonly used fabric by Godley, which I dyed myself with avocado pits, creating a knot set, inspired by the way you would tie a rebozo and a denim jacket that fuses both the virgin archetype and the mother carrying their baby.
